MINARET
OF ZADYAN
LOCATION: Balkh
Province. 34km north of Balkh. Near and north of the village
of Zadiyan; 14 km northeast of the village of Daulatabad
DATE: Kushan or Hephthalo-Turk,
1st-9th C. (A- architecture); Seljuk period (1108/1109) (B-inscription).
DESCRIPTION: Two buildings:
(A) one extremely ruined, in which we can recognise a stupa
of large dimensions built in unbaked bricks of the same type
as those stupas in Balkh. In the centre of the monument there
is a central dome that could be a primitive stupa of smaller
size. (B) In the south of the stupa there is an islamic monument
built in unbaked bricks attached with lime mortar, similar
to the minarets of Ghazni (the Minaret of Daulatabad). The
upper part has dissapeared- a flight of 16 remaining steps
once provided access to it. It is lit by two narrow openings.
The exterior decoration is well preserved. It is made of bricks
attached with mortar.
