"Built in the 17th century by a great scholar
of Balkh, this magnificent fragment of what was a huge academic
establishment bespeaks the renaissance of Balkh during the
Timurid and Uzbak periods. The interior of the arch is elaborately
embellished with decorative architectural motifs popular in
Herat during the height of the Timurid period."
